Practice and preparation

Practice expectations are individualized. The aim is not a fixed number of minutes, but regular, attentive work that supports the goals we establish together.

Play

Organ

  • Arrange practice times in advance and observe all facility rules.
  • Bring organ shoes, music, a pencil, and current registration notes.
  • Divide difficult passages into manuals, pedal, and small combinations before reassembling them.
  • Leave the console and room exactly as you found them.
Create

Composition

  • Bring the current score, sketch, recording, or problem—even when the work feels unfinished.
  • Keep dated versions rather than continually replacing a single file.
  • Export a PDF and audio mock-up before lessons when practical.
  • Make a short note of the questions you most want to address.
Understand

Theory & musicianship

  • Bring the assignment, instructions, and relevant course materials.
  • For ear training, favor frequent short sessions over occasional long ones.
  • Sing, play, write, and listen whenever possible; each reveals something different.
  • Mark specific places where your reasoning or hearing becomes uncertain.

Policies at a glance

Calendar and lesson formats +

The regular studio year runs from September through May and includes 30 lessons. Optional summer lessons are arranged individually. Organ lessons are primarily in person; composition, theory, and musicianship may be in person or online.

Makeups and credits +

With at least 24 hours’ notice, weekly students may receive up to two makeup lessons per semester. If a makeup cannot reasonably be scheduled, a credit is issued. Emergencies and sudden illness are handled case by case. Teacher cancellations are always rescheduled or credited.

Payment and withdrawal +

A reminder is sent when payment is seven days overdue. Lessons may pause when an account is more than 14 days overdue unless another arrangement has been made. Weekly students may withdraw with 15 days’ written notice; the final account is reconciled according to lessons received and credits owed.

Materials, facilities, and online study +

Students purchase assigned music, books, software, and other necessary materials such as organ shoes. Organ access depends on church or university availability. Online students are responsible for a reliable connection and suitable technology, instrument access, and software.
